Who is at Risk for Mesothelioma – Mesothelioma, a deadly disease that has dominated news headlines for the past decade, is caused by asbestos fibers in the air. Unfortunately, the lack of control of asbestos use in the past, and possibly even today, exposed millions to airborne fibers, and thousands contracted the disease as a result.
It is fair to assume that almost everyone on the planet has been exposed to asbestos in some way or another. Because of the disease’s peculiar existence, even those who have only had minor exposure to it are at risk of contracting it. In practice, nearly everyone is at risk of developing Mesothelioma.

However, this type of argument can go beyond the realm of reason. Although it is possible that people who have been exposed to small quantities of asbestos for brief periods of time have acquired the disease, this is a rare occurrence rather than a normal occurrence. In fact, the vast majority of cases of Mesothelioma include people who were exposed to asbestos fibers in the air for long periods of time.
Shipbuilding trades, asbestos mining and milling, textile manufacturing, construction insulation work, and brake repair workers are the sectors most at risk of sustained exposure and therefore contraction. However, there are a few other minor factors that can influence the chances of contracting the disease.
Radiation exposure is one of them. There have been cases where people who were exposed to radiation developed symptoms of mesothelioma and eventually contracted it. However, observational research attempting to show this connection have not been quite conclusive.
The Polio vaccine, which was distributed between 1955 and 1963, was another more certain cause of the disease. Simian Virus 40 was found in several samples of this vaccine and has been linked to a variety of rare cancers, including Mesothelioma.
Those employed in the construction industry or who lived in homes in Turkey’s Cappadocia region are especially vulnerable. Homebuilders in this area used Erionite, a type of zeolite silica stone. In Turkey, exposure to the fibrous strands of this building material has resulted in an annual death rate of roughly 1% of the population dying of mesothelioma.
